MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

On behalf of the high school administration, I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. I hope you found time over the holiday season to rest, relax and recuperate ready for another busy semester.

For Juniors taking the IB Diploma, the new school year began with the Extended Essay Kick Off Day hosted in the Lofthouse and the HS Library. The Extended Essay is a research paper of up to 4000 words that requires students to conduct independent research on a topic that interests them. It is a mandatory prerequisite for the award of the IB Diploma and should be completed before the start of senior year. Particular thanks to Ms. Thompson, Mr. Relf and Ms. Schooley for putting together the day-long program intended to give our Juniors all the information they need to start developing their research question.

Of course, it is an anxious and emotional time for many of our Seniors just now, as they begin their final semester at ISM. While some already know which college or university they will matriculate at, most are eagerly awaiting news of their applications. As someone who has watched my own children navigate the journey from ISM to university, I can testify that this process is exciting and nerve wracking in equal measures. I am confident, however, that the Class of 2019 will each find their best fit institution and will follow previous classes by successfully making their mark on the world. Thanks to Eric Swan and his counseling team for their hard work and guidance as they shepherd our students through this challenging time.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and hard work of Tim Venhuis and Kanghee Huh, this evening marks the return of Run to the Sun, a run / walk relay to raise funds for the GreenEarth Heritage Foundation. The community event has student / teacher teams run or walk around the track throughout the night. Teams will need to push themselves physically and mentally to complete the challenging relay. Across the school we have three separate events. In ES, Run to the Sunset from 4:30pm to 5:30pm; in MS, Run to the Sun from 6pm until 8pm, and in HS, the full 12 hour relay from 6pm Friday until 6am Saturday. Teams in the 12 hour event camp out on the HS field, enjoying the cool January weather and grabbing quick power naps while not running / walking. Those teams that successfully manage the full 12 hour relay receive stylish medals crafted by the school’s Design Technology staff. Finally, capping off the event is a wonderful PCA breakfast at sunrise for the participants. The Run to the Sun organizing group is looking forward to a great night!

Next week on Wednesday 16th January, ISM will host the second annual Manila Student Film Festival. This is the only film festival in the Philippines organized by students for students. We had over 100 entries this year from over 30 schools across the country from which a panel have selected 28 finalists. 12 of these are our very own ISM filmmakers from Middle and High School but there are also categories for Elementary School and university students. We highly encourage you and your families to join us for the gala screening, which will take place from 5pm – 7pm in the Fine Arts Theater. There will be a chance to meet our 5 prestigious film industry judges during the question and answer session from 4.30pm – 5pm in the AMR, in addition to refreshments and promotions from our sponsors, Scout Magazine, ART+ Magazine, Dunkin Donuts and Canon in the FAT foyer. There will also be an opportunity to meet the filmmakers and have your photo taken on the red carpet! It promises to be a fun-filled event. All films are appropriate for elementary age children and there is plenty of variety with animations, dramas, comedies and documentaries. Please come along and support our young and talented filmmakers.

The preliminary round of our annual Battle of the Bands event will be held on Saturday 19th January on the Elementary School field. This is the opening round of one of high school’s biggest and best events. Numerous students auditioned for spots in the contest and only the best were selected and sorted into two categories, the vocalists and the bands. Doors open at 5pm and the event begins at 5:30pm. Students will sing, play and showcase their musical talent for the audience and will be judged by a panel of staff members with the best acts in each category going on to the finals on Saturday 9th February. In addition to our excellent student performers, there will also be a dozen delicious food vendors plying their wares, fantastic prizes to be won in the raffle and a good time to be had by all. Tickets can be purchased for P300 for the Prelims alone, P400 for the Finals alone or you can can also get a combined ticket for P600. These, and the raffle tickets (available in a variety of assortments), can be bought outside the Kantina during HS lunches, tutorials and after school.

Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the families that are new or returning to ISM this semester. I hope your first few days have been happy and that you are already starting to feel part of our school community.

Sincerely,
Dave Birchenall
High School Assistant Principal
