MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

With second season IASAS in full swing, we have the pleasure of hosting swimmers from our five sister schools this week. It was great to see so many people cheering on the participants yesterday and there were some impressive performances from our Bearcat swimmers. There is definitely something about the kinship and camaraderie of the IASAS experience that sets it apart from other tournaments. Saturday is the final day of competition so, if you are able, please come along and support our student athletes. On behalf of the Athletics Office, I would like to send a special thank you to  everyone that helped house our visiting swimmers.

Season Two is the busiest IASAS sporting season. In addition to swimming, we have our tennis players in Bangkok, our basketball teams in Singapore and our rugby teams in Kuala Lumpur. The first day of competition produced some fantastic individual and team performances so be sure to read next week’s bulletin for updates on our medal tally. Remember that you can watch live streams of all the action by following the links from the IASAS website at http://www.iasas.asia. Good luck to all our Varsity athletes.  Let’s hope they reap the rewards that their hard work and commitment deserve.

Thanks and congratulations to Mr. Nazareno, Ms. Provencher and Ms. Barlongay for their organization of this year’s Tri-M Jazz Night last Tuesday evening. La-La Land came to the Little Theater with Jazz Band leading the music supported by Show Choir as an ensemble and solos. Advanced Dance performed for many of the dances to get the parents in the mood for dancing. Thanks to everyone that came out to support especially those that braved the dance floor to show off their moves.

Just over two weeks ago, we hosted the second Manila Student Film Festival in the Fine Arts Theater. It was an amazing night and the judges were impressed with the quality and diversity of the films. The winners were as follows:

Category 8 – 11 Year Old: Hugs by Kasey Hermias (Cebu International School)
Category 12 – 14 Year Old: Chicken by Chloe McAlister, Lain Calvo, Lucas Kahn, Megan Quintana (International School Manila)
Category 15 – 18 Year Old: Dear Camera by Liyora Santos (International School Manila)
Category 19 – 21 Year Old: Noli by Sean Harold Bongalon, Xierdon Manalo and Rodnie Bolivar (University of Makati)
Category: Audience Choice Award: Ednis (University of Saint Louis Tuguergaro)

Congratulations to all the winners. To see the winning films or to find out more about the festival, please visit the festival website at: https://sites.google.com/ismanila.org/manilastudentfilmfestival/home

Back in school, course selection week is rapidly approaching. Teachers are chatting with students about their academic plans for next school year and our counseling team are meeting with all Sophomores to discuss the myriad of options available to them as they enter Junior year. Now is the perfect time for you to be talking to your sons and daughters about their plans, too. For the parents of current Juniors planning to attend college or university in the US, be sure to sign up for one of the two forthcoming Mock Admissions evenings. These evenings will be hands-on, interactive sessions focusing on the process US colleges go through after they receive student applications. You should have received an email about these events earlier this week.

Finally, on behalf of the High School administration, best wishes for a happy Lunar New Year celebration. I hope you have good things planned for the four-day weekend.

Regards,
Dave Birchenall
